Hypothetically, a program like 7zip which can act as a virtual disk driver and provide transparent access to files that way could do away with the need for temporarily storing decrypted files anyway. But, the authorized user who decrypts it on their computer cannot expect the files he or she decrypts to be secure against anyone who may have access to that computer during that time or afterwards - unless they have done additional work themselves to ensure that. In its current form it's best to think of the encryption feature of 7z as protecting the archive while in transit - that is, if written to a thumb drive, sent as an email attachment, sent in instant messaging etc nobody can read the contents should they happen to intercept it and they aren't the authorized recipient (ie, don't have the passphrase). Unexpected termination of the program will lead to the plaintext files not being deleted at all and remaining on disk.Backup or archiving software could grab it in that time. The plaintext file existing for any (short) length of time still gives an opportunity for other software to read it during that time.It isn't guaranteed to wipe all trace of the file, due to remapping in the drive such as wear-leveling.Overwriting of the temporary files after use has a number of flaws. I'm going to be looking for a better way to encrypt my files. I can't express to you how FUCKED UP it is that 7zip does this. Instead of finding out YEARS later that they have been exposing their passwords in plain text on their harddrive. That way at least a user who's paying attention will see that "hey, there's this artifact left over in the directory i was just using". Get rid of the fucking temporary file and create a temporary file in the same directory as the archive. Or better yet, don't fucking create obscure hidden plain-text temporary files of encrypted information. However, 7zip NEEDS to delete these created files on its next opening. I understand if I open a file, accidentally close 7zip, and then save it (it being the temporary file), that 7zip will have deleted the tmp file, but I then recreate it. This is a MASSIVE security risk and is completely unacceptable for software that handles encryption. These files have been exposed plain-text for over a year.
